My Story
Asuman’s father died of AIDS before Asuman was old enough to recognize him. Although his mother is still alive, she is HIV-positive and often very sickly. When she is able to work, Asuman’s mother earns less than $2 per day serving food in a local restaurant.
Before receiving support from New Hope, Asuman w0uld eat only once a day and could not attend school regularly due to a lack of funds. When not in school, Asuman fetches water for the restaurant where his mother works. He sleeps in a two-room house in the Kisenyia slums of Busia with four siblings and two cousins, all under the care of Asuman’s mother.
Asuman dreams of finishing school and working as an accountant.
